Euro 2024 has given so many great moments, from last gasp goals to crazy exits which has made this summer that little bit more exciting! In this blog we will cover all of it and rank The Frying Squad's Euro 2024 top 5 best moments.
5. Turkey vs Georgia
A game worthy of the top 5 moments of the tournament. Arguable on the most entertaining games of the tournament; which no one expected. An end-to-end game, filled with passion and desire to win from both teams. Goals from Guler, Mikautadze and Muldur, the game looked like Georgia were going to steal a draw off Turkey but as we approached the dying minutes of the game, the Gerogians were hopeless as they sent their Goalkeeper up for a corner in the hope that they would somehow manage to put the ball in the back of the net. Corner comes in and its cleared by Turkey straight to Akturkoglu who had no one in front of him, a vulnerable Georgian defense saw him tap the ball into the net to finish off a quite spectacular end to the game.
4. Gunok save against Austria
One of the more recent moments but one that deserves to be in the top so far. A game that everyone foresaw Austria to win considering their recent form and ability to top their group ahead of France. However the game went to opposite way, as the Juventus defender, Demiral buried two headers from set-pieces to put Turkey ahead. Austria snatched one back and put the pressure on towards the end of the game. With seconds to go the ball was floated into a dangerous area and a header that looked like it was going right into the bottom corner before Gunok miraculously saved the ball on the bounce, a match winning save that sees Turkey through to the Quarter-finals to face the Netherlands.
3. Georgia 2-0 Portugal
A team who sit 74th in Fifa ranking vs one of the tournaments favourites, easy one to call right? Not on Georgia's watch. Despite Portugal coming in with 9 changes, they were still able to field a team who people thought would breeze past their opponents. Not in this case, as Gerogia were able to break the deadlock through their talisman, Kvaratshkelia, with wonderful run through the Portuguese defense putting the Gerogians ahead inside 2 minutes. Portgual could not find a way through all game, it looked like they were heading towards an unlikely defeat. This was sealed after a penalty appeal for Georgia went in their favour and the on-form, Mikautadze took his chance well to seal the 2-0 for Georgia. A shock result, a moment that will really go down in Euro history.
2. Hungary Last gasp winner
Hungary vs Scotland, last game of the group stage. With both teams needing a win to even be considered for the round of 16, we knew this one was going to be a nail-biting game for both set of fans. The game was end-to-end, some great chances for both teams but towards the tail-end of the game it looked like Scotland were going to snatch a goal, until Hungary saw an opportunity for the counter attack. The Scottish were outnumbered as the ball went out to Sallai, who put in a super ball for Csoboth who buried it home to shatter Scottish hearts in 100th minute of the game. A terrible way to lose after a good effort from the Scots but that's football for you...
1. Zaccagni 90+8
Despite, defending champions Italy crashing out of the competition in the round of 16, they can cherish at least one moment of this anti-climactic campaign. Croatia looked certain to win the game, however a darting run from Calafiori right through the heart of the Croatian midfield, opened up space for Zaccagni on the left, who buried it right in the top right corner to secure a 2nd place spot in group B. A great moment which saw glimpses of Del pieros goal against Germany in 2006, but instead this time round Italy did not go all the way.
