Fish and Chips: Past, Present, Future

Fish and chips is a dish deeply rooted in British Culture, with a history that spans over a century. The story begins in the mid-19th century when fish and chips shops or "Chippies" started popping up across the United Kingdom. The marriage of fried fish and potatoes, both brought to Britain by immigrants (The Jewish community introduced fried fish, while the French introduced "pommes frites"), quickly became a working -class staple due to its affordability and simplicity.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, fish and chips became an integral part of British working-class life. Industrialisation led to the rise of urban working populations who needed quick, filling meals. Chippies offered just that - hot, hearty food that was to eat and on the go. By the early 20th century, fish and chips were firmly established as a national favourite, with shops opening in every town and city.
